{"id":439,"date":"2009-10-09T11:59:11","date_gmt":"2009-10-09T15:59:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chrisbaer.net\/mp\/?p=439"},"modified":"2023-08-18T10:33:01","modified_gmt":"2023-08-18T14:33:01","slug":"new-dr-who-logo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chrisbaer.net\/mp\/2009\/10\/09\/new-dr-who-logo\/","title":{"rendered":"Re-Branding a Time Lord"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Funny thing about <em>Doctor Who<\/em> is that the show&#8217;s visual identity has always centered on the current iteration of the Doctor and in the swirly title graphics; the title logo has never really been a focus for fan identity.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/chrisbaer.net\/mp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/logo_05_06.jpg?resize=300%2C169&#038;ssl=1\" style=\"float:right; padding: 0px 0px 0px 10px;\" alt=\"Current Dr. Who Logo\" title=\"Current Dr. Who Logo\" border=\"0\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The lens-flare-esque logo for the Ninth and Tenth Doctors is a case in point. It&#8217;s just sort of there, really, not entirely memorable as it flips and flops in the time vortex as impatient viewers wait to for the show to start.<\/p>\n<p>Prior logos were similarly utilitarian, as a nice <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/doctorwho\/s4\/features\/galleries\/gallery_logos\/1\">BBC image gallery demonstrates<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/new-doctor-new-branding-5375331\">io9<\/a> brings news that the BBC is <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20091206095557\/http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/doctorwho\/s4\/features\/bulletins\/bulletin_091005_01\">updating the logo for the Eleventh Doctor<\/a>, incorporating that most iconic of <em>Doctor Who<\/em> images, the TARDIS:<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/chrisbaer.net\/mp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/new-who-logo.jpg?resize=640%2C505&#038;ssl=1\" style=\"display:block; margin-left:auto; margin-right:auto;\" alt=\"New Doctor Who Logo\" title=\"New Doctor Who Logo\" border=\"0\" width=\"640\" height=\"505\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While I&#8217;m admittedly circumspect about <a href=\"https:\/\/chrisbaer.net\/mp\/2009\/01\/03\/new-dr-who\/\">Matt Smith&#8217;s casting as the Eleventh Doctor<\/a>, fearing that the new show runners are playing to a younger demographic than, well, the demographic that I inhabit, I like this new logo.
